The H1 Students Stress-Free
Guide to Effective Exam Prep
by Falak Maan
Exams are a source of stress for most students, but it doesn’t have to be that way. The right strategies can help reduce stress and boost your chances of success. Here are some practical tips to support your effective and stress-free studying!
Plan Ahead: Start early and create a task-based study schedule. This can be structured however you want. One recommendation would be to use an ‘Eisenhower Matrix’. Task scheduling with the Eisenhower Matrix involves prioritizing tasks based on how urgent they are (upcoming deadlines) and how important they are (weight). By having a clearer idea of what needs to be done first, you will be less stressed to cram tasks together and enable a more flexible schedule to ace your exams!
Stay healthy: Eat the right foods, get sunshine and exercise regularly. Even at lower levels, ensure this is consistent and regular. Not only will regular exercise and proper nutrition optimize your physical performance, but it will also give you the edge to push harder and learn more from your study sessions, which means less cramming later on! Some recommendations are to get direct sunlight 30-40 minutes after waking to sustain energy throughout the day, getting 10-15 minutes of active movement between long study sessions and eating highly nutritious, fibrous fruits, veggies and lots of protein!
Use NSDR and other mindfulness practices: Unlike typical meditation, Non-sleep deep rest can help relax your sympathetic nervous system and dopamine levels between study sessions, decrease insomnia symptoms and allow you to reach a deeper focus.
Create a comfy study space: Set the ambience however you like but ensure that it’s distraction-free, well-lit and organized. You can even classically condition deeper learning, such as with coffee, Pomodoro buttons and other stimuli that are used only during the study, allowing their use to be cues for deeper focus.
